Family : Anacardiaceae
Description : The specie originated in relatively dry tropical regions of the Americas (Caribbean and
North-East Brazil). It was introduced in Senegal by Portuguese navigators in the 16th century.
Cashew is a small tree that is about ten meters high. Its fruit recalls a huge bean; it is roasted and
marketed under the name, cashew nut.
The upper part of the fruit is covered with a yellow or read meaty matter: the cashew apple that is filled with
an abundant and slightly astringent juice.
Uses : it can be consumed raw or as compote; the fermentation of the juice can provide wine or alcohol
through the process of distillation.
Germination : In favourable climatic conditions, the cashew can produce fruits abundantly and regularly.
